Iconography and graphic representation of the school colonies in the Balearic Islands Provincial Council. An approach through the analysis of memento photographs
Abstract
For several years historians have been interested in the value of images as a whole, and of photographs in particular, as an historic source. There is no doubt that photographs are an important historic witness in order to reconstruct aspects of history, but this fact does not impede their use giving rise to controversy, especially concerning the methodological treatment that should be applied to these sources, and the relationship that should be established with other sources. The use and exploitation of photographs as historical sources requires as with any other historical source careful critical analysis and rigorous methodology which as yet is not as consolidated as what has been used for centuries with other sources. In this article we aim to approach the study of the images which in the nineteen twenties were generated by the school colonies of the Balearic Islands Provincial Council.
