The pedagogical dimension of the term discipline in St. Augustine

Abstract

St. Augustine inherits the pedagogical vocabulary of the Greek and Roman classics, which, in turn, had been incorporated to the Bible by the Latin translation. However, such vocabulary takes on new meanings in St. Augustine?s works. Moreover, his flexibility in the use of language becomes evident when analysing the various meanings he attaches to a single term throughout his works.

For instance, he employs the term discipline with at least ten different meanings, in which the philosophical influence of Neoplatonism and Stoicism is obvious, as well as the gradual enrichment of such meanings as they take on religious and theological connotations.
