Strategies for the solution of conflicts in the classroom
Abstract
The existence of conflicts in the classroom is a usual phenomenon, which is inherent to every Formal Education System. These situations don't necessarily have to become negative, because if conflicts are dealt with adequately and a satisfactory solution is given, they acquire an educational potential and can be used to strengthen relationships between people.
But we must take into account that, with the raising of the school-leaving age from fourteen to sixteen years, the number of conflicts in the classroom and their seriousness has grown. Because of this, it is necessary to face up to the new situation using techniques and strategies that are more adequate. Some of them are proposed in this article: organization in the classroom, a climate of democratic participation, assemblies in the classroom, learning of rules, mediation and negotiation, self-esteem of the pupils, control and handling of the aggressiveness and work plans.
